Sweet Deals For Cars May End Soon, Says MAA

KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) -- The offers and incentives to buy new cars could soon be over, says Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) president Datuk Aishah Ahmad.

She expects the downturn in new car sales to turn around this month because much of the overhang in stocks of new cars have been exhausted and car firms will now focus on new models.

"MAA hopes that consumers will start buying more vehicles. Right now is the best time to buy because there are still a lot of offers," she told reporters after a Chinese New Year luncheon for MAA members and the media here today.

"Now that all the stocks have been almost cleared, we hope the second half of 2007 will be a better year for the auto industry."

Aishah said MAA expects March to see a small increase in vehicles sales, reversing the January performance, when sales went down by 16 percent, and what is expected to be a stagnant February.

A reclassification of vehicles could pump up the figures. "For 2007, we have reclassified all passenger-carrying vehicles, including MPVs and SUVs, as passenger cars," she said.

Previously, SUVs were classified as commercial vehicles.
