HOST - Universiti Teknologi MARA

1. INTRODUCTION

UiTM TO HOST 35th IFTDO WORLD CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION 2006

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), will host the 35th International Federation of Training and Development Organisations (IFTDO) World Conference and Exhibition 2006 (IFTDO 2006) from 22 - 25 August 2006.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, will give the Keynote Address and officially open the conference and exhibition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 22 August.

This is the first time that a university is hosting the IFTDO World Conference Series as the 35 year old federation always gives NGOs the right to host the conference. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is IFTDO 2006 Patron, and Dato’ Mustapa Mohamed the Minister of Higher Education and Datuk Seri Fong Chan Onn the Minister of Human Resources are IFTDO 2006 Advisors. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will be the Guest of Honor Speaker.

Themed: Education & Training Harmonized, the conference has four sub-themes; Lifelong Learning, Innovation, Social, Political and Economic Issues in HRD, and Human Capital Management.

In the past, the role and influence of education and training had moved along different paths. However, in the changing world of today, the roles of training and education need to be married and synergised. Education and training must once again be redefined. The world today demands that practical experience in training be integrated with theories and ideas in education to create practical yet innovative new learning to benefit those who embrace learning as a lifelong journey. The conference will address these and related issues.

Well-known specialists in the areas of education and training from various parts of the world, including Canada, India, Indonesia, Australia, China, Britain, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Fiji, Nigeria, the US and Malaysia, will be speaking at the conference. The former prime minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the special ‘Guest of Honor Speaker’.

Between 1,800 and 2,500 foreign and local participants are expected to attend the conference.

In conjunction with the conference, the Board and Annual General Meetings of the IFTDO will be held on Sunday, 20, Monday 21st, and Wednesday 23rd..

The IFTDO was set up in Switzerland in 1972 and is the sole global federation of organisations with members from human resource development (HRD) professionals and corporations representing the industry in their respective countries.

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) was established in 1956 as a training centre and is today a full-fledged university conducting 250 courses in its 16 campuses throughout Malaysia.
