SPECIAL CONFERENCE ON SETTING UP INTERNATIONAL ZAKAT BOARD 2006

1. Introduction

A special conference to establish an International Zakat Board to help needy Muslim countries will be held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, Nov 28.

The aims of the conference, among others, are to generate and pool ideas and thoughts, share experiences in managing, collecting and disbursing zakat funds, identify areas of co-operation in managing international zakat, and solicit views on the establishment of the proposed board.

Eradicating poverty using zakat funds was first highlighted by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, about a year ago.

He had suggested that a special fund with the resources coming from zakat be established to tackle poverty in Muslim countries.

Based on Malaysia's commitment to meet such challenges head on, it was felt that this special conference will be able to pave the way to help less developed Muslim countries out of poverty by establishing an international board for zakat to disburse zakat to the needy.

The conference will see nearly 200 local and foreign participants in which about half are from abroad.

The Prime Minister will deliver his keynote address at 3.30 pm on Nov 28.
